The asphalt penetrometer is mainly used to measure the penetration of viscous petroleum asphalt, viscous shale asphalt, liquid petroleum asphalt, and the residue after distillation or emulsification of asphalt materials. The penetration of asphalt is the depth to which a standard needle attached with a certain mass penetrates vertically into the sample under specified time and temperature.
